Will follow up with India if no reply received: Bangladesh on Sheikh Hasina's extradition

DHAKA: Bangladesh is awaiting a response from India regarding its request for the extradition of deposed PM Sheikh Hasina and a reminder will be issued if no reply is received, the foreign affairs ministry said Tuesday. Though ministry spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam acknowledged that the extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India does not specify a time-frame for responses, he said Dhaka is ready to take the next step if India does not respond within a “reasonable” time period.
Meanwhile, on India’s strong protest over key interim govt aide Mahfuz Alam remarks, in which he had said India should recognise the uprising that forced Hasina to resign, the Bangladesh chief adviser’s deputy press secretary Apurba Jahangir said that the Facebook post by Mahfuz was entirely his personal opinion. In another post, which was later deleted, Mahfuz had claimed that certain Indian territories should be part of Bangladesh. “He later posted a clarification,” Apurba said, asserting that the comments did not reflect the govt’s position.
