The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is under scrutiny after Superintendent Mike Miles admitted to a significant oversight involving $870 million in unauthorized spending. The error, which spans purchases made between August 2023 and December 2024, has raised questions about accountability and transparency in the district’s financial operations. As reported by the Chron.com, the unauthorized purchases included everything from playground equipment to new locks for school doors—items that administrators believed didn’t require prior board approval.

According to Superintendent Miles, the procurement mistake stemmed from an incorrect assumption that some purchases could bypass board approval. He described the incident as a “good-faith error,” acknowledging the mistake while assuring the community that internal practices would be adjusted to prevent future missteps.
