Aamir Khan quits smoking ahead of son Junaid’s film ‘Loveyapa’: reveals how Kiran Rao used to get bothered by the smoke earlier
At the trailer launch of his son Junaid Khan’s upcoming romantic comedy Loveyapa, Aamir Khan revealed that he has quit smoking. The actor shared that this decision was not only a personal commitment but also a gesture as a father to support his son’s debut in the Hindi film industry. Aamir admitted that he had been considering quitting for a while and finally decided to let go of the habit.
Reflecting on his smoking journey, Aamir mentioned in a 2018 interview with Mid-Day that he had tried to quit in the past, particularly during his training for the action-packed film Dhoom 3. However, he returned to smoking during movie releases, as the habit helped him cope with stress. He also revealed that his then-wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao, was affected by cigarette smoke, although she didn’t mind him smoking a pipe. Aamir shared that he even experimented with cigars but didn’t enjoy the experience.
In the same interview, Aamir talked about switching to a pipe after a friend suggested it. He explained, “I liked smoking a pipe so much that I couldn’t go back to cigarettes. When I tried a cigarette again, I found the taste horrible.” He was also spotted smoking a pipe during an Instagram Live session while promoting Laapataa Ladies, a film directed by Kiran Rao.
Aamir and Kiran were married for 16 years before announcing their separation in 2021. They first met during the making of Lagaan in 2001, where Kiran worked as an Assistant Director. The former couple shares a son, Azad Rao Khan, and have continued to collaborate on professional projects.
On the work front, Aamir’s next film, Sitaare Zameen Par, is set to release soon, further solidifying his commitment to his career and family.
