FIR filed against Anurag Kashyap for ‘derogatory, casteist’ remark against Brahmin community | Hindi Movie News

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has become embroiled in controversy after a formal complaint was submitted to Mumbai Police on Friday (April 18), accusing him of making an offensive and caste-based remark against the Brahmin community. The complaint, which calls for an FIR to be registered, centres around a statement allegedly made by the director in response to an online comment.
The phrase in question – “Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem?” – has drawn heavy criticism online. Social media users and community members have labelled it as derogatory and inflammatory, with many demanding immediate legal intervention. The director’s contentious remark reportedly came in response to a comment on one of his own Instagram posts.
The complainant, Ashutosh J. Dubey, took to X (formerly Twitter) to publicise the action taken. In his post, he wrote, “I have officially submitted a complaint to @MumbaiPolice seeking registration of an FIR against @anuragkashyap72 for his derogatory and casteist remark against the Brahmin community… Such hate speech cannot be tolerated in a civil society. The law must take its course.”
I respectfully request @MumbaiPolice to take appropriate legal action and register an FIR against Mr. @anuragkashyap72 for his concerning behavior. Dubey, an advocate and Head of the BJP Maharashtra’s Social Media Legal and Advisory Department, also tagged Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis while expressing his deep concern. “As a member of the Brahmin community, I am deeply offended by this derogatory and hateful comment made by Anurag Kashyap. Such a statement is not only casteist but also incites hatred and violates the principles of dignity and equality protected under our Constitution. I request @MumbaiPolice to take immediate cognisance of this caste-hate speech and register an FIR under relevant sections of the BNS. No one is above the law, and such divisive, hateful content must be dealt with sternly,” he added.
At present, Kashyap has not issued any official response regarding the allegations. Mumbai Police, too, have not released a statement nor confirmed the status of any FIR related to the matter.
The controversy is believed to have stemmed from Kashyap’s recent criticism of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). He had voiced strong opposition to the delay in the clearance of Phule, a biographical drama directed by Ananth Mahadevan and featuring Pratik Gandhi as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai Phule.
The film has been at the centre of a storm, with objections reportedly raised by members of the Brahmin community in Maharashtra, who have accused the film of misrepresentation. Kashyap questioned how the film – still unreleased – had even been accessed by protestors, and also expressed frustration over the CBFC’s handling of the issue.
