Karnataka SSLC exam grace marks policy revoked, check details here
The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) has announced that it will no longer offer grace marks to students. In response to criticism from various quarters and a reprimand from the Chief Minister, the School Education and Literacy Department has decided to withdraw the grace marks policy for the Class 10 examination. This decision was confirmed by the School Education and Literacy Minister, Madhu Bangarappa, on October 9, 2024.
Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah instructed the department to discontinue the practice of awarding grace marks, stating that it negatively impacts the quality of education and discourages a competitive mindset among students.
The controversy surrounding the grace marks system was ignited by KSEAB’s decision to increase grace marks from 10% to 20% in all subjects after the SSLC examination recorded a dismal 54% pass percentage, which was artificially boosted to 74% with the addition of the grace marks. Reports indicate that the initial introduction of the 10% grace marks system was intended to address learning gaps caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The decision to eliminate grace marks arises from concerns about educational quality and fostering a competitive mindset among students. While some fear that this change may lead to a resurgence of cheating during examinations, experts believe that implementing appropriate measures can effectively mitigate such risks.
